my package of essential oils arrived two days ago and i have been in a blending frenzy. my boyfriend bought everything on my wishlist (daww), which i wasn't expecting when i wrote them in order of desirablity/needability/musthaveability. i was beaming with delight as i opened and sniffed the dark bottles of sandalwood, clary sage, rose geranium, lemongrass, black pepper.... and of course, dark indonesian patchouli! i used my last bit of patch when i made smug so i was looking forward to getting a nice large bottle of this.
what is it about patchouli that is so darn amazing? its one of those scents that on its own makes me go "ugh, get that away from me", a bit like rosemary or cedarwood. it desperately needs to be blended before i can stomach it. the difference is that i wouldn't care if someone broke in and stole my rosemary and cedarwood, but i'd be devastated if my patchouli was gone.
adding a tiny bit of it to a blend seems to just bring everything together. also i swear it pretty much goes with everything;- the standouts, to me, are patch-orange, patch-lavender and patch-vanilla. its a case of "ugh" to "oooh". any citrus works amazingly actually. i love lush's karma, which is patch-orange with lemongrass and lavender. patch-vanilla with other spicy/earthy notes is also great. patch-vanilla-citrus-spice knocks my socks off!
anyway, enough patchouli raving for me. got to get back to blending and filling in gaps in older blends (some patch will probably do this). i have about half a dozen new blends i'm working on at the moment and they each have between five to seven components so getting the right balance is crucial.
peace out, people.

Oh your blends sound AMAZING. And I totally agree with you about Patchouli. It is my favourite. I get panicky if my bottle is running low... thanks for the post and some new blending ideas! I love Patchouli Geranium... Oh and I have recently found that Rosemary on its own is not bad in a honey soap... xo Jen
Jen, i think i have to use a bucketful of honey to mask the scent of just rosemary.i can't do more than 25% rosemary in my blends or i feel like i'm wasting the other 75% lol!
